I was born in Los Angeles, California and never fit in. I’ve lived in New York, Seattle, and Ankara, Turkey. I have been an actor, an archivist and a union stage manager. I am an activist, an historian, a writer and through it all a teacher.

 

I have always treasured diversity in a learning environment, and work especially well when it is present. The lessons we learn from history include us all and are essential if we are to move forward. I am not unfamiliar with the challenges this presents both at home and abroad.  When I succeed, I fill in the gaps. This is what I hope to do whenever and wherever I teach. This is what I try to do whenever and whatever I write.

 

I work to create a space where there are no stupid questions (okay, maybe there are a few stupid questions, but most seem to get the difference); a space where it is safe to disagree, and where students can rise to the best of their potential. Everyone deserves that opportunity
